The Importance of Upper Back Strength

The Importance of Upper Back Strength

Posted May 1, 2024

The upper back or thoracic spine and ribcage are structures that should not get ignored during exercise routines or as part of neck and pelvic health programs.

The thoracic spine and ribcage provide a base or pedestal for the neck and head to rest upon. If the upper back is not strong enough, or posture has been compromised by rounding forward, the neck and head will also, ultimately follow suit or compensate for the imbalance below. This can lead to neck pain, stiffness, headaches and even contribute to TMJ.

If the upper back and ribcage begin to round forward and create a slump or hump in the back, this can cause the ribcage to press downward into the the pelvic contents. Protruding abdomen may occur, pelvic floor muscles, hip and lower back muscles thus become overly strained. This can contribute to lower back pain, incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and even pelvic pain.

The diaphragm muscle which is housed just under the lower ribcage may also be compressed and become tense when we have upper back weakness. This muscle is vital for respiration, core stability, nerve function and digestion to name a few.

If you have osteoporosis, osteopenia of the upper spine and ribs, if you have neck or head pain, if you have pelvic floor dysfunction or any sort, it may be time to have an expert check the function of your thoracic and ribcage region as part of a comprehensive evaluation to see restoring strength and mobility to these areas can help you to feel better.
